What Businesses Need to Know About the PSTN Switch Off

In 2017, BT announced that they will be phasing out the old analogue phone network (the public switched telephone network or PSTN) and moving to a fully digital network.

This means that the PSTN (or ISDN) service will be stopped by November 2025, when BT will have moved all existing users of the analogue network over to the new digital one.

By November 2025, every phone line in the UK will be digital, routing calls over IP (internet protocol).  This will apply to both home phone lines and business phone lines.

How will the PSTN switch off affect my business?

If you’re already using a VoIP phone system, you don’t need to take any action (although if you’re looking for VoIP support or help making the most of your VoIP system, get in touch).

If you’re currently using an analogue phone line for your business, you’ll need to move over to a digital phone line before the deadline in 2025. It’s a good idea to start this process as soon as possible as the closer we get to the deadline, the longer the process will take.

Remember, the PSTN switch off will affect any systems that connect to your PSTN or ISDN phones lines, from security alarms and door entry systems to EPOS machines, CCTV, and faxes.

What’s the reason for the PSTN switch?

For decades, phone systems relied on traditional PSTN lines, but recent technological advances have changed the way we communicate, with a shift towards internet-based methods and mobile networks. PSTN lines are resource-heavy and the infrastructure is costly to maintain, whereas digital networks are easier and more cost-effective to maintain and offer lots of benefits, like better scalability, improved voice quality and additional features, like video calling.

This transition reflects a broader trend in the industry, where advancements in technology enable more efficient and versatile communication solutions, aligning with the evolving needs of users.
